Sándor István: Magyar könyvesház, avagy a’ magyar könyveknek kinyomtatások ideje szerént való rövid említésök
Győrött, 1803. Streibig Jó’sef. (10)+285p.
One of the essential works of Hungarian reference books. In the retrospective bibliography, the author made the first to attempt to collect all books that had been published in Hungarian up to that point. In the age of language cultivation, the national literary research turned to works written in the Hungarian language to search for and register them. The first notable representative of this new endeavour was István Sándor, who worked to create a national bibliography under the influence of the ideas of the Enlightenment. First, in the third volume of his work titled "Sokféle", he dealt with 16th-century prints. Then, since no one followed his example regarding 17th-century publications, he wrote this work based on his own previous research and already existing registers. It lists about 200 titles from the 16th century and more than 1,000 titles up to 1711. Following this section, the book provides information about the authors for about 50 pages. Because of this work, the author is referred to as the first Hungarian bibliographer.
Slightly worn, contemporary hardpaper. Uncut.
